Chapter 16: The Church Supper

The Findlay Grace Church held its supper the last Saturday of every month, and everyone came.

My mother had run the pie table for eleven years.

I walked into the fellowship hall at six o'clock with my burned hand wrapped in gauze and a manila envelope in the other.

Nolan walked beside me, a step behind, as I had asked.

Two hundred people sat at long tables under paper lanterns, with plates of ham and scalloped potatoes.

The talk dropped as I came in.

The whole county knew by now.

The deputy's report had made the diner by breakfast, and the Whitaker name had made it by lunch.

My father sat near the front with my aunt.

He had been released on a citation and his own recognizance, with a court date in June.

He wore a clean shirt, and his chin was up.

He thought this was his town.

"Well, look who's brought her big-city fellow to supper," he said, loud enough for the back row.

"Do you want to explain to the neighbors why Tate Whitaker's man says we owe twelve thousand dollars?"
