Chapter 4: The Chair of the Board

I told Bree through the back door that I was sick and going home.

She looked at Evan standing in the alley, and then at me.

"Mar, who is that?"

"Nobody. I'll call you tomorrow."

"Okay. Okay, feel better." She waved at me with both hands, smiling too wide.

Evan's car was parked at the end of the alley, a long black sedan with a driver's door he opened himself.

"I'll take the bus," I said.

"It's one in the morning, and a man at that club just threatened you in front of forty people."

"He didn't threaten me."

"He offered you dinner in exchange for a photograph of you being carried unconscious through my hotel."

I got in.

The leather seat was warm, and the car smelled faintly of cedar and coffee.

Evan pulled out onto Fulton Street and kept both hands on the wheel.

For a block neither of us said anything.

"You said you remember nothing," I said. "Nothing at all?"

"Dinner downstairs with a supplier. I went up to my suite around eleven." His eyes stayed on the road. "A bottle came up with a card saying it was a gift from a client. I poured one glass. The next thing is the chair, and the sun."

"Which client?"
