Chapter 9: A Night He Would Keep

Evan's POV

She said don't, and for a moment I couldn't answer.

For days I had slept in a chair beside a bed I couldn't remember.

Now she was standing in front of me with my tie in her fist.

I wanted to be sure.

I wanted to be sure the way I hadn't been sure of anything since the chair.

"Jada."

"What?"

"Tell me this is yours."

She looked up at me, her grey eyes steady, her mouth swollen from mine.

"It's mine," she said. "Every minute of it. Open the door."

I got the key card out of her jacket pocket with a hand that wasn't quite steady.

The door shut behind us, and she shoved me back against it.

I let her.

She kissed me hard, with her hands flat on my chest, and I felt the whole day go out of my body.

She bit my lip, and I groaned into her mouth.

I caught her by the hips and turned us, and her back met the wall.

She gasped and then she grinned.

"Rule two," she said.

"You've broken it twice."

"So have you."

I pulled her jacket off her shoulders and let it fall.

Under it she wore the green dress from dinner, with a zipper down the back that I found with my fingers.

"Slowly," she breathed. "I want to remember every second."

The words went through me.

I wanted that more than I'd ever wanted anything.

I drew the zipper down an inch at a time, and kissed the line of her neck as the dress opened.

Her skin was warm, and she shivered under my mouth.

The dress slid to the floor.

She stood in front of me in a plain black bra and underwear, with a bruise fading yellow on her hip.
