Chapter 15: Nana's Kitchen
At midnight Nana Bess put a bowl of dough in front of me and told me to hit it.
"It's not a punishment," she said. "It's Tuesday's bread. But if you need to hit something, it's the only thing in this house that won't file a complaint."
Callie sat across the table with her chin on her fist.
The kitchen smelled of yeast and woodsmoke. The clock over the stove said ten past twelve.
Roark and Grandpa were out at the gate, taking turns at watch. We had not seen Roark since the trucks left.
"Okay," Callie said. "I have a plan."
"No," I said.
"You haven't heard it."
"I heard your last one. It involved a wedding dress and a hostage swap."
"That was a good plan. The dress was for distraction." She sat up straight. "This one is better. We drive to Ironwood, I pretend to be a pizza girl."
"They know your face."
"They know Winona's face. I'm a stranger with a hat."
"You were standing in the yard this morning, holding a rolling pin."
"Nana was holding the rolling pin. I was holding a supportive mood."
Nana Bess snorted into her flour.
Callie laughed too, and then it went out of her all at once.
She looked down at her hands on the table.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I keep making jokes."
"Teddy's in a truck with men who have rifles."
"And I'm the only person in this kitchen who can't do anything."
I put the dough down.
"You can't turn into something," Callie said. "You can't smell bear. I can't even smell if the milk's off."
