Chapter 19: The Bath

By Monday night I had lived in his flat for six days out of a canvas tote bag.

I knew which stair creaked, and which burner stuck, and how he took his tea.

I knew he read in the bathtub when he couldn't sleep, with a towel folded behind his head and a lamp on the shelf.

Tonight there was no book.

The tub was an enormous old claw-foot thing, deep enough to sit up to the shoulders in.

He had run the water from the tap, and it was hot, and the little bathroom was thick with steam.

I stepped in first and sank back against the slope of the porcelain.

He climbed in behind me, long legs on either side of mine, and pulled me against his chest.

I felt every part of him at once.

"Hello," he said, in my ear.

"Hello."

"Tomorrow is two o'clock."

"I know when tomorrow is."

"Let's not talk about it."

"That's the nicest thing you've said all week."

I closed my eyes and let my head fall back on his shoulder.

His hands moved over my arms under the water, slow and wet, and he kissed the side of my neck.

His mouth was warm.

He took his time.

His palms slid over my stomach and up, cupping my breasts.

He rolled my nipples between his warm fingers until I arched into him with a gasp that echoed off the tiles.

"Good," he murmured, his hard cock pressing against the small of my back under the water. "Let me hear you."
