Chapter 12: Hotel Shower

Martha's voice came out of my phone on the kitchen table at nine that night, dry and unhurried.

"I've read the note," she said. "It's a personal loan between friends. No collateral."

Hank listened.

"There's no default until a written notice, and the notice requires sixty days."

Hank sat across from me with both hands wrapped around a mug of tea.

"So he can't call it in thirty?" he said.

"He can say he is. He can't make you pay. I'll draft the letter tonight."

"Thank you, Martha."

"Don't thank me. Sleep." She paused. "Audrey?"

"Yes."

"Your voice sounds warmer than it did in October."

She hung up.

Hank looked at me over the mug.

"She knows."

"Martha always knows."

"Is that all right?"

"It's wonderful. Put the tea down."

He put it down.

"Stand up."

He stood.

"Come to the bathroom. I want a shower, and I want you in it."

I turned on the water, and let it run hot, and undressed in the steam.

He undressed too, watching me.

His skin was flushed, and his eyes were dark.

"Tonight," I said, "you'll wash me."

"Yes."

"With your hands. All over. And you'll tell me what you see."

"Yes, Audrey."

We stepped into the shower together.

It was tight, white tile and a clear curtain, and the water ran over us in a warm sheet.

I stood facing the wall with my palms on the tile.

He soaped his hands.

He started at my shoulders, thumbs pressing slow circles into the muscle, and I let my head hang forward.

"What do you see?"

"Your back," he said. "It's long. There's a freckle by your left shoulder blade."

"Go on."

"Another one at the bottom of your spine."

"Keep going."

His hands slid down my sides.

They cupped my waist, and my hips, and he whispered: "You have the most beautiful hips I've ever seen."

"Say that again."

"Beautiful. I could look at them all day."

"Good."

He soaped the backs of my thighs and the curve of my ass, and I felt his breath catch.

"Now the front."
