Chapter 20: The Band

The band was black leather, plain, an inch wide, with a small steel buckle and nothing stamped on it.

I had bought it that morning from a man who made belts in a shop in Bloomfield, and he had not asked me why.

It lay on the dresser in my bedroom, on a folded white cloth.

Hank stood in front of it at ten that night with his shirt already off.

He didn't touch it.

"Tonight I buckle it on you," I said. "Then I tell you what comes after."

"Yes."

"What comes after is a thing you asked for, on the pad. You put it on the maybe list in your own handwriting."

His face went red.

"The spanking."

"Light. Open hand. Ten strokes, and you count them. You say Salt and it stops, and I never mention it again unless you do."

"I want it," he said. "I want it from you."

"Why from me?"

"Because you'll count when I can't."

I picked up the band.

"Hold out your right wrist."

He held it out, with the burn scars silver under the lamp.

I wrapped the leather around his pulse and drew the strap through the buckle, slowly, until it sat snug.

I checked it with one finger.

"Too tight?"

"No."

"Look at it."

He looked.

"It's yours," I said. "Whenever you wear it, you answer to me."

He nodded.

"Whenever you take it off, that is your decision, and I won't ask why."
