Chapter 7: The Hearing

The registry council met in a round hall with a stone floor and a glass ceiling, and the gallery was full by eight.

Press filled the first two rows.

Gordon Haglund sat at the left table with his arm out of the sling for the cameras and three lawyers around him.

Kerensa sat at the right table with Rafe beside her and no lawyer at all.

"You can have mine," Rafe had said that morning.

"I don't need one."

"Everyone needs one."

"I need five minutes," she had said, and he had let it go.

The chair of the council was a gray woman with a gavel and no patience.

"The petition of Gordon Haglund for guardianship of his daughter," she said. "Counsel."

The lead lawyer stood.

He was smooth and tall, and he had clearly been paid a great deal.

"Madam Chair, the facts are simple. Kerensa Haglund is registered F, unawakened. Two weeks ago she suffered a skull fracture. Since then she has assaulted her father, struck four security staff, and appeared in a gate in a state the doctors describe as a personality change."

He held up a folder.

"Her treating physician writes that she is confused and prone to violence. We ask only that she be placed in her family's care."

"She is dangerous," Gordon said from his seat, loudly enough for the room.

The chair lifted her gavel a quarter inch.

"Mr. Haglund."

"Madam Chair, I'd like to answer," Kerensa said.

The chair glanced at the empty seat beside her.

"You have no counsel."

"I'll be quick."

"Go on."

Kerensa stood.

"Everything he said is true," she said.

A murmur ran around the gallery.

Gordon's lawyer smiled.
