Chapter 8: Unopened

Kerensa did not open the envelope in the car.

She held it on her knee all the way back to the guild and watched the rain run down the glass.

"You're gripping it," Rafe said from the other seat.

"It's addressed to you."

"It's in your hand."

"Lorna kept it sealed. She didn't read it." Kerensa turned the envelope over. "She wants me to hand it to you and watch what it does."

"Then we shouldn't give her that."

"We're not. We're opening it together."

He did not argue.

In his office on the fortieth floor, she laid the envelope on the empty desk between them.

He took a letter opener from a drawer and slit the flap.

Two pages came out, folded in thirds, in the round, slanting handwriting she had seen on the front.

Rafe unfolded them and held them out to her.

"They're yours," he said. "Read them."

"They're not mine."

"They're hers. You carry her hand."

She took the pages.

"Dear Mr. Nyberg," she read aloud. "You don't know me. My name is Kerensa Haglund, and I'm told you were meant to marry me."

Her voice caught on the next line.

She read it anyway.

"I was found two months ago. I'm supposed to be happy about it. I try. This house is very quiet and very polite and nobody here has asked me one question about my life."

Rafe stood at the window with his back to her.

"I called your office last week and left a message. Nobody called back. That's fine. You're busy. I'm only writing because I think there's something wrong in this house, and I don't have anyone else to say it to."
