Chapter 9: The Terms Break

"I was on the quarry road that Friday," Rafe said.

The office was dark except for the desk lamp, and the rain had thickened on the window.

Kerensa held the letter against her chest.

"I was coming back from the Northern gate. It's the only road that cuts back to the city." His voice was low and even. "I found you at the bottom of the drop."

She had guessed it, and hearing it still stopped her.

"You found me."

"Yes."

"Did you call the ambulance?"

"I did a few things before I called."

"What things?"

"Not tonight," Rafe said. "I'll tell you on the road itself. In daylight. I want you to see where it happened before I say another word about it."

She looked at his face.

He was not hiding anything from her, she thought.

He was keeping it for the right place.

"Tomorrow," she said.

"Tomorrow."

She slept badly.

At seven she walked into the training yard behind the tower in sweatpants and a borrowed Nyberg shirt, because she could not sit still any longer.

It was an open concrete square with a sand ring at one end.

Rafe was there already, in a black shirt with his sleeves pushed back.

"You didn't sleep," he said.

"Neither did you."

"Spar with me."

"With abilities?"

"Without. I want to hit something and not break it."

"I'd say you're optimistic."

"I'm S-class. I can take a hit."

"Don't say that before breakfast."

She stepped into the sand ring.

He came at her first, a clean straight punch, and she turned it off her forearm and drove her elbow back.
