Chapter 14: Maren
The riders wore green, not grey.
There were three of them, hunters with a pack of lean dogs, and the oldest sat a mule at the head of the road.
He looked at the three of us dripping on the gravel.
He looked at my hands, where the last gold sparks were still going out.
"Feathers of light, they said at the market," he said. "Come up to the barn, lad. The dogs will keep your scent off the road."
I did not trust him, and I had no other choice.
His barn stood a mile up the gorge, behind a cottage with a smoking chimney.
His wife took Linnet straight into the kitchen with a blanket and a bowl of soup.
She did not ask a single question, and I could have kissed her feet.
Ilsabet slept through the whole day in the straw of the barn loft.
I sat against the ladder and watched her until the light went.
When I came down to the kitchen at dusk, Linnet was sitting by the stove with her palm unwrapped.
The cut from the collar was pink and closing.
"Look," she said. "Rowan, give me yours."
