Chapter 24: Wings
I got to her as the last scale turned to light.
The huge shape melted off her.
It left a woman lying on the paving stones with her hair spread around her in a ring of gold.
I fell to my knees and caught her head.
She was warm.
She was breathing.
The lines had gone out of her face, and the grey had gone out of her hair.
She looked like a woman of thirty-five who had slept a long and healing sleep.
She opened her eyes, and they were gold in the red dusk, wide and clear.
"Rowan," she said.
Her voice was her own.
It was strong and low, with no crack in it.
"I'm here."
"I know," she said. "I felt you there, the whole time. Every night."
Behind me, Linnet cried out and threw herself down on the stones beside us.
The three of us held each other in the square while the sun sank into the sea.
Ilsabet stood at a little distance, with her rod hanging from her hand and the white streak bright in the last light.
My mother held out her arm to her without looking.
"Come here, girl. You're part of this too."
Ilsabet came.
The envoy arrived at full dark, in a carriage with an escort of the king's own lancers.
