Chapter 5: Two Million
Nathan's house in Brookline had twenty-two windows on the front alone.
I looked up at them from the driveway while two men carried my four suitcases inside.
My mother had cried in the car and then told me to eat vegetables.
Billie had insisted on riding with me and given me a tour of her opinions the whole way.
"The house is too quiet," she said now, rapping her cane on the marble hall. "It's been too quiet since Elise. Nobody has had a loud conversation in here in two years."
"Elise?"
She glanced at Nathan, who stood by the stairs with his jaw set.
"His wife," Billie said gently. "She was a loud one. I liked that."
Nathan said, "Your room is at the top of the stairs."
He walked up ahead of me without another word.
On the second floor he opened a door onto a big bright bedroom with a bay window and a bed made up in white.
"Mine is at the end of the hall," he said. "You have your own bath. Anything you want is yours."
"What's behind that door?"
I pointed to the one across the hall.
It was painted pale yellow, and a small brass lock gleamed under the handle.
His face closed.
"That's the nursery," he said. "It's locked."
"Okay."
"It was finished before she got sick. I haven't opened it since."
"Okay," I said again, more softly.
He nodded once and went downstairs.
Dinner was served at eight in a dining room with a table for sixteen.
Billie sat at one end and I sat at the other, and Nathan sat between us looking like a hostage.
The cook brought out a roast chicken and Billie started interrogating me.
"Do you drink?"
