Chapter 11: Why Your Eyes Glow

Lucan kicked his bedroom door shut behind us and set me on my feet.

I stood there in a robe and borrowed trousers, with a legal pad crushed against my chest.

"You can't just carry me off," I said. "That's against section one of the terms."

"There is no section one about carrying."

"There's an implied one."

"Then bill me."

I put the pad on the dresser and turned around.

"Odette counted out the exact change," I said.

"I saw."

"She had it ready. She heard the total once, and she did the subtraction while smiling."

"I know," Lucan said.

"Is it her?"

"I have a stone and a slip of paper," he said. "I have a book with her initials. I do not have a reason that would stand in front of the elders, and she is my brother's widow." His jaw flexed. "Give me one week."

"What do I do in the meantime?"

"Eat her biscuits and do not die."

"That's your plan?"

"That is the part of the plan that involves you."

I looked at him.

He was breathing hard, and his hands were fists at his sides.

"Your eyes are doing it again," I said.

"Yes."

"I've been meaning to ask. Why do they glow?"

He was quiet for a second.

"When I am angry," he said. "And when I want something I cannot have."

"Which is it now?"

He did not answer.

He crossed the floor in two steps and pushed me up against the door.

His mouth came down on mine, and this time I was not surprised.

I got my hands into his hair and pulled him closer.

He kissed me until my knees went, and then he bit down the side of my throat, and my wolf howled in my chest.

"I have been wanting you," he said against my skin, "since you sat down in the first chair in my library."

"Only the first?"
