Chapter 16: Not Leaving

My apartment in Riverside has two bedrooms, one bathroom and a couch that Dottie calls "the situation."

I had been home for twenty-six hours, and I had spent every one of them being evicted.

"Thirty days," Frankie said, standing over the kitchen table with a statute book. "A landlord has to give thirty days' written notice before a tenant can be removed."

"He's not my landlord."

"He's not any kind of landlord. He's a husband who put you out. I looked in three codes and there's no section for it."

"Write that down."

"I did. It's in the margin."

I sat at the table and added a line to the ledger: Eviction, one, no notice, value unknown.

Then I crossed it out, because I couldn't stand how much I wanted to know the value.

At nine o'clock someone knocked on the door.

It was one knock, flat and heavy.

Dottie put her eye to the peephole and slid down the door.

"It's him," she whispered. "He's wearing the coat."

"Don't open it."

"I wasn't going to open it."

"Open it," I said.

Dottie opened it.

Lucan filled the doorway, with the porch light behind him and his hair wet from the rain.

He had to duck.

He had a thick stack of folders under one arm, tied with ribbon.

"Mr. Thackeray," Frankie said, and stood very straight. "Under section nine of the residential code, you must serve written notice."

"I wrote one."

He held out a folded sheet of his own stationery.

Frankie read it.

"It says, quote, 'Come home,'" Frankie said.

"That is the notice."

"That's the opposite of an eviction."

"I have been told this evening that I am bad at it," Lucan said.
