Chapter 21: Tea Is Over
Odette stood on the swearing stone with her chin up and the river at her back, and I thought, for one terrible second, that she was going to get away with it.
"Go on," she said to the council. "Hear the oath."
"Odette," said the eldest councilwoman. Her voice shook. "This stone does not forgive a false word."
"Then I shall not speak one."
"The oath requires you to say what you want."
"I want what is owed to my son's blood." Odette lifted her hands. "I want the house my husband built and my brother-in-law wasted. I want the seat, and the pack under it, and every one of you finally seeing who has run this family for thirty years."
She said it so sweetly.
The wind dropped.
The old woman rose from her folding chair with a creak that carried across the clearing.
"Now," she said. "She said it. All of it. And she meant it."
"It's a very good speech," Dottie whispered.
"Hush."
"I'm only saying."
Odette's smile held for as long as it took the stone to go warm under her shoes.
I saw it first on her wrist.
A thin curve of light came up through the skin, pale and cold, in the shape of a crescent.
It was gray, where the mark on my own wrist had been silver.
Odette looked down at it.
She turned her arm over.
"What is this?" she said.
"The Goddess has marked you," said the old woman, in a voice I had not heard from her before. "As she marks any who swear."
"Marked." Odette gave a little laugh. "Then I am accepted."
