Chapter 13: Mine

Nobody in the hall said anything.

Everyone looked at my stomach at the same time.

I'd never felt so many eyes in one spot.

"Read it again," somebody said near the back.

Kyle was happy to.

"The guest who ends the Anomaly goes home tonight." He waved the card. "Tonight. Not day one hundred. Tonight."

"Ends it how?" the brave one said.

"Use your imagination."

Ambrose moved.

It wasn't fast. It was just very large, all at once.

Half the hall flinched back against the walls.

I put my hand flat on his chest before he could take a second step.

"Don't," I said.

"Daisy."

"If you stand in front of me, they'll say I'm hiding behind the monster." I kept my voice low. "Let me do this one."

His jaw worked.

He stayed where he was.

Penny let go of my arm. I stood on my own.

The room still tipped a little at the edges, but I'd taught circle time with the flu.

I walked to the middle of the hall, right in front of the silver tray.

Penny came and stood on my left.

The boy in the Indiana hoodie came and stood on my right. His bandage was gray now from the cook's dishwater.

"Okay," I said. "Here's where I'm at."

I could see every face. That's the thing about the cook's glasses. Soft at the edges, but I could see.

"I didn't plan this. I found out ten minutes ago, same as you."

"Convenient," Kyle said.

"I'm talking."

He actually shut up for a second. Circle-time voice. Works on everybody.

"If somebody in here wants to end it," I said, "I'm standing right here."

I spread my arms out a little.

"I'm not going to the nursery. I'm not hiding in the master's wing. I'm going to eat lunch and do the dishes and walk these halls like I've done for twelve days."

My voice shook on "dishes." I let it.

"So if you want to go home on top of me and my kid, come do it. To my face. In the daylight. With everybody watching."
