Chapter 24: Mommy's First Rule

"Then I'll write one," I said.

Mouse stared at me.

"A rule. You said the mommy gets to write. So let me write one. Right now."

"That's the last rule. For the last day."

"Baby, I can't wait fifty days. Penny can't wait fifty days."

Ambrose was kneeling beside me on the polished floor now. He'd torn his mask off.

"Mouse," he said quietly. "Is Daisy the mommy?"

Mouse looked at him. Then at me.

Then at the guests standing around us in their masks, still and frightened, the night shifts and the cook's helpers and the boy with his fists clenched.

"She made the chart," Mouse said slowly. "She came back every time. She tells the good stories."

"Is that a yes?" I said.

Mouse reached into the front of her nightgown and pulled out the pen on its pink ribbon.

She held it out to me.

"You're the mommy," she said. "Write."

The boy was already running for the dollhouse.

He came back with the red ledger hugged to his chest, out of breath, and dropped it open on the floor in front of me.

The first clean page after Mouse's crayon.

My hand was shaking. I wrote anyway, in my big round preschool printing, the kind I use on name labels.

NOBODY DIES ON THE NURSERY FLOOR.
