Chapter 13: Six Calls
Holt looked at the phone and did not take it.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Look at the calls," Mavis said. "The last page."
She flipped it open with her thumb and held it out in front of her.
The screen was small and green and scratched.
It showed a list of outgoing calls, all to the same name, Calvin V.
The first call was at 2:17 p.m. and the last was at 2:59 p.m.
The four between them were spaced about ten minutes apart.
Beside every line, where the length of the call would be, the screen said 0:00.
Holt took the phone and read the list a second time, then a third.
"You called Calvin," he said.
"Six times."
"Why him?"
"Your phone went straight to voicemail, because the rules say it stays off in the bag."
"I didn't have your caddie's number."
"The hospital told me you were on the 12th, in the last group."
"Calvin was the only man out there whose number I had, from your wedding list."
Her voice was steady, but the crackers in her cardigan pocket rustled as her hand shook.
