Chapter 14: Moving Day
Saturday afternoon the gallery at Marsh Point was six thousand people deep, and every one of them had a phone.
The leaders went out last.
Calvin Stratford stood on the first tee at twelve under par, four shots clear of the man beside him.
He was in a pale blue shirt with his sponsor's name across the chest, and he was smiling at everyone.
"Mavis looked tired yesterday," he said, quietly, as they waited for the starter. "Is she sleeping?"
"She's fine," Holt said.
"I hate that she's carrying so much."
Holt looked down the fairway.
He had planned all night what he would say here, and in the end it was nothing.
He had a phone with a green screen in his pocket, and Bryn stood at the rope with his daughter on her shoulders.
He took his driver from Amos and hit it two hundred and ninety yards.
Calvin watched the ball land.
For the first time since Thursday, Calvin did not have a joke.
