Chapter 13: Easter

I put my cup down very carefully.

"Easter," I said.

June looked up.

"You were here at Easter. You sat across from me and ate ham. Paula brought the rolls."

"Mom."

"She passed your father the butter, and you watched her do it. You already knew what that was, and I didn't."

"I did."

"I stood at that stove and asked if everybody had enough." My voice was climbing and I let it. "I asked Paula if she wanted to take a plate home."

"I remember."

"You let me sit between them for months, June."

I had not known I was going to say it.

It had been in me since the moment she handed me the folder, sitting quietly under the relief, and now it was on the table with the toast.

June did not flinch.

She pushed her chair back an inch and folded her arms.

"So did you," she said.

"What?"

"For fourteen months. You sat between them at every birthday and every Fourth of July. You didn't know, and I did, and which of us do you think had the worse seat?"

"That is not the same."

"No." Her chin shook. "It's worse. At Easter I went upstairs and threw up, and you thought I had the stomach flu. You made me soup."

I opened my mouth and nothing came out.

I remembered the soup.

I remembered carrying it upstairs on the good tray and sitting on the edge of her bed while she turned her face to the wall.

"I'm sorry," I said.

"For what?"

"For being angry at you. You were seventeen and holding a thing no one that age should hold."
