Chapter 3: Reasonable

Calvin explains the key card away, then threatens that she will be the one to evict Paula in front of June; Sonya records him and he orders her to smile at his family's toast tomorrow.

Calvin was sitting up in bed with his reading glasses on and a folder of renewal notices across his knees.

I put the printed page from the Linden Court portal on top of the folder.

He read the line that said Cardholder: Calvin Roark.

He took his glasses off.

"Sonya, you're about to make a mountain out of this."

"Six months," I said. "You have had a key to her building for six months."

"She asked me to."

"Why?"

"She lives alone in a city where she knows nobody but us." He folded the glasses. "She was afraid of falling in the shower and lying there. Someone needed to be able to get in."

"So you got a card."

"I got a card. I was being a friend, which is more than I can say for most of the people she knows."

His voice was steady and kind, and every word of it was built to make me feel small for asking.

I put my hand in my cardigan pocket.

My phone was already recording.

I had started it on the stairs.

"And the kiss?" I asked.

"She was crying. It went too far for about three seconds. I'm sorry you saw it." He met my eyes. "That's all it was."

"Three seconds."

"Yes."

"And the card?"

"I told you why I have the card."

"How did Paula know which pocket your pills were in?"

He blinked. "What?"

"She knew which pocket they were in. You told me she stopped by your office. Which was it, Calvin, the office or your bag this morning?"

His jaw tightened.

"Both. Don't interrogate me in my own bedroom."

"It's my bedroom too."

"It's also my house," he said. "Lower your voice. June might come home."

"June is at a party until midnight."

He swung his legs off the bed and stood up.

He did that when he was done being patient.

"Let me tell you how this goes, Sonya."

I waited.

"The lease is in your name. You signed it. You pay it. If you call that building tomorrow and cancel, Paula has nowhere to go and a ruined credit report."

"I know what her credit is."

"Then you know who put her on the street." He lifted his chin. "Not me. You. With your signature. And when June asks why her aunt lost her home on graduation weekend, you can tell her."

I had spent twenty years being afraid of exactly that sentence.

I wasn't afraid of it now.

I felt cold and clear and completely awake.

"You want me to believe I'm the one doing the damage."

"I want you to think about who gets hurt." He picked up his phone from the nightstand. "The family is coming at one tomorrow. The cookout for June. My mother is bringing the cake. Forty people, Sonya."

"I remember."

"You will smile at that toast."

"Will I?"

"You'll smile, you'll hug my sister, and you'll pass the potato salad." He looked down at me. "Whatever you decide about me, you will not do it where June can see it. We agreed about her. That's the one thing we have always agreed on."

He was right about that.

It was the one thing we had always agreed on.

He thought he had just reminded me of it.

What he had done was tell me exactly where I had been trained to stop.

"I'll host the cookout," I said.

Calvin's shoulders dropped in relief.

"Thank you."

"At one o'clock."

"That's all I'm asking."

I turned off the light on my side of the bed.

I took my pillow into June's room and lay down in her narrow bed under the glow-in-the-dark stars she had never taken off the ceiling.

I stopped the recording.

I sent it to myself twice, once to my work email and once to a folder on the cloud.

Then I took the legal pad out of June's desk drawer and wrote at the top, in block letters:

LINDEN COURT. 8 A.M.

I looked at it for a long time.

Then I wrote, underneath:

CANCEL THE CARD.

Down the hall, Calvin's light went out.

He believed that he had won.
