Chapter 10: Parking Lot
Bennett found me in the parking lot after the dessert plates were cleared.
He had taken off his jacket and was carrying it in one hand, and his face was blotchy.
"You made Grandma do that," he said.
"I didn't know she would."
"You let her. In front of everyone. Dad's friends, my friends, my professors." His voice cracked. "It was my night, Mom."
"I know it was."
"Then why couldn't you just sit where I put you for two hours? That's all I asked."
I leaned against the car.
The lot was nearly empty, and a streetlamp buzzed over us.
"Bennett, I'll tell you what you asked me for. I'm going to say it once, and I'm going to say it kindly."
He waited.
"You asked me to accept her. You asked me to smile at her, and sit at the end of a table, and be fine."
"She's having a baby."
"I'd accept a lot for you. I have. I've accepted twenty-four years of your father's schedule."
"Dad has never lied to me," he said. "Not once. He's always told me the truth."
"He told you I'd agreed."
His mouth opened.
"He told you it would hurt me, and so you shouldn't mention it. Those were your words, Thursday. He told you that, and you kept it from me for two months."
"I thought I was protecting you."
"I know you did. That's why I'm not angry at you."
"You sound angry."
"I'm hurt," I said. "It's different. Angry I could get over by Tuesday."
He stood there with the jacket hanging from his hand.
"If you'd just smiled," he whispered. "None of this would have happened. Everyone would have gone home."
