Chapter 15: Looks Fine

Randall opened the door himself.

Danica came in with her hand spread over her stomach and her eyes already wet.

Darren followed with her bag over his shoulder and took a place by the wall, where he could see everyone.

"Randall, I'm so sorry to come like this." Her voice caught. "Darren said you'd been shown something. He said they cut it."

"Cut it how?" Bennett asked.

She turned to him with the soft look she used on him at the dinner.

"Sweetheart, we were rehearsing. The season opener has a scene in the dressing room, and Darren was reading the other part with me. Someone has taken three minutes out of a long afternoon and made it sound like something else."

"You said it's eleven weeks," I said.

"The character is eleven weeks."

"And Darren kissed you."

"Darren kisses everyone. He's an affectionate man." She laughed, and it came out thin. "It's the business. You know it is, Helena. You've sat through enough wrap parties."

I looked at Randall.

He was looking at her stomach, and I could see him wanting to put his hand on it.

"Who has the full file?" Darren asked. He said it kindly, to the room. "Because I'd like to see it uncut, before we say anything we can't take back."

"Professor Llewellyn has it," Bennett said.

"Of course he does."

"What does that mean?"

Darren shrugged, and looked sorry about it.

"It means he's the one who approved the playlist on Wednesday. The student told me. He read the list, saw all seven files, and wrote back that it looked fine." He turned to Randall. "I'm not saying anything. I'm only asking why a professor would sign off on a surprise clip about his student's father and then be so quick to find it ugly."
