Chapter 20: The Rehearsal Dinner
The Dayton Country Club ballroom held eighty guests at round tables under a chandelier the size of a car.
Daphne sat at the head table in an ivory dress, with her ring on her hand and her eyes on the tablecloth.
My mother sat beside her in navy silk, with her hair done and her lipstick perfect.
She looked like a woman at the top of her life.
The groom's mother sat across from her and had not touched her wine.
"Before the salad," my mother said, rising with a glass, "I'd like to say a few words."
She smiled around the room, warm and tearful.
"Three weeks ago, this family faced the worst news a mother can hear. And I want to say to you, my dear friends, that God answers prayers."
A few guests murmured.
"We learned only days ago that our Veda was well. That the hospital had made a terrible mistake." She pressed a hand to her chest. "I did not know. I swear to you, I did not know, until a stranger told me. I'm still in shock. I think I always will be."
