Chapter 29: Tea
Molly was crossing the gym parking lot when a black car stopped in front of her.
The back window slid down.
"Mrs. Falk," the driver said. "Mrs. Wainright would like a word. She says it concerns Hazel."
Molly looked at the gym door, where Troy was inside, waiting with Dane for the ambulance he had already called.
She could go and tell him.
He would say no, and then he would come with her.
He had sworn on a gate not to lift a hand, and she did not trust either of them to keep to it in that house.
She got into the car and sent no message.
The Wainright conservatory had glass walls and a tiled floor and a table laid for two.
Judith sat at it in a cream cardigan, pouring tea into thin cups.
"Sit, Miss Aubrey."
"Falk."
"As you like." Judith did not look up. "Sugar?"
"Where is Hazel?"
"Upstairs, with a nurse, eating mashed peas. She took the bottle in the end."
Molly sat down because her knees insisted.
Judith slid an envelope across the white cloth.
Molly opened it.
It was a cashier's check made out to her, in her maiden name.
It had a five and five zeros.
"Five hundred thousand dollars," Judith said. "And a house in Oregon, if you like trees."
"For what?"
"For going. You and Mr. Falk keep a very small life, and I'm prepared to pay you to keep it somewhere else."
"I'm not leaving my husband."
"I am not asking you to leave him," Judith said. "I am asking you to leave the case. Sit out Friday. Take the check, go to Oregon, and be a mother where no cameras are."
"Hazel's not my daughter."
"No?" Judith looked up at last. "You have bathed her. You have fed her. A court may find that interesting."
Molly's mouth opened and closed.
