The sentences came down eleven months later, on the morning of Hazel's second birthday, in the same courtroom.

Troy sat in the front row with his hand on his wife's knee.

Molly sat beside him with their three-month-old son asleep on her shoulder, and she had not let go of Troy's arm.

Celia and Giselle sat on his other side.

The gray-haired judge looked over her glasses at the defendants' table.

"Greta Voight, you pleaded guilty to perjury and to false report of a felony. Two years."

Greta did not look up from her shoes.

"Dane Ostrow, you pleaded guilty as an accessory. Because you came forward on your own, and because the court has seen your confession, I sentence you to probation and four hundred hours of community service."

Dane relaxed slightly.

"The service will be performed at an address the court has selected."

He looked up.

"Mr. Falk's gym will supervise it," the judge said. "Mr. Falk has agreed to the arrangement. I understand there are mats to be mopped."

Behind Troy, someone snorted with laughter.

Dane's face crumpled, then straightened.

"Yes, Your Honor," he said.

"Mr. Wainright."

The old man rose in his wheelchair.

"You pleaded guilty to conspiracy and to the original charges. You cooperated with the district attorney against your sister. Six years, with credit."
