Chapter 18: The Box
Willa's POV
Meadowland has no winter, and the rehabilitation garden was green when he came.
I sat on a bench in a quilted coat, with a heating pad in my lap and my father watching from the window.
I had agreed to five minutes. I had told my father to count them.
Kellan stopped at the garden gate and did not come any closer until I nodded.
He was carrying a cardboard box. It was the size of a shoebox, and it had been taped shut and cut open again.
"I'm not here to ask for anything," he said.
"Then why did you come?"
"To give you things that belong to you."
He set the box on the grass at my feet, and then he stepped back, as if the box might not be safe.
The first thing in it was a warming kit. It was brand new, the same make I had carried for twelve years, with a spare medication case taped to the lid.
"I phoned your doctor," he said. "I asked for exactly what you use. I didn't want to guess."
"I have one," I said.
"I know. Now you have two. One for each coat."
I put it to the side.
The second thing was a thin hospital folder with a Westridge stamp.
I knew it before I opened it.
"The fountain," he said. "I went to the guard who did the compressions. I asked him for his report."
"Kellan, I'm not going to read this."
"I know." His voice was low. "I wanted you to know I read it."
"Forty compressions. The doctor on shift wrote that you had no pulse for almost two minutes."
