Chapter 11: Sell Me the Debt
"You can't afford it," Rafe said.
"Tell me the number."
"Eleven million, plus interest. Cash, in eighteen days."
"Tell me what you'd take today."
He studied me for a long time.
"I'd take two million down," he said at last. "A note for the rest, with the Kingsbury paper itself as collateral. If you can't pay, you lose it and I keep the hotels. If you can, the paper is yours."
"The paper is mine."
"Every promise Kingsbury ever signed. Every deadline, every hotel. You'd be the one who decides what happens on the thirtieth."
I looked at my father.
"Dad."
"I heard," he said, quietly.
"Two million is more than the company has."
"It isn't more than the land."
I closed my mouth.
He rubbed his jaw with one big hand.
"The buyer Brooks's father found," he said. "I never liked him. He wouldn't let me read the contract twice."
"Dad, that land is the last thing Mom's name is on."
"Your mother," my father said, "would have set a match to it herself for what they did to you."
His voice cracked on the last word.
He turned to Rafe.
"I'll sell. To a real buyer, at a real price. Can you find one?"
"By Friday," Rafe said.
"Then do it."
I went around the pallets and put my arms around him.
He smelled of coffee and cardboard.
"I'm sorry," I said into his shoulder.
"Don't you dare be sorry." He held me hard. "Be mean."
The papers took four hours.
We signed in Rafe's conference room on the top floor, with a view over the harbor and every light on.
