The hearing was at two o'clock, in a gray room on the third floor of the county courthouse.
I wore yesterday's jacket and Rafe's second-best tie, because I had no time to go home.
My father sat beside me in his party suit.
He had not slept either.
Across the aisle sat Brooks's family lawyer, a silver-haired man with a leather folder.
Brooks sat behind him, shaved and smiling.
He had two reporters in the back row, and he waved at them.
The judge came in and sat.
"Mr. Kingsbury's counsel asks me to freeze the sale of a parcel owned by Mr. Clifford Tarrant," she said. "Counsel, tell me why."
The silver-haired man stood.
"Your Honor, Ms. Sylvie Tarrant signed a prenuptial agreement with my client, Brooks Kingsbury. Section nine lets either family pledge assets against the other's debts. Her father's land is covered. He cannot sell it out from under that pledge."
He held up a document.
On the last page, in blue ink, was my name.
"That's not mine," I whispered.
Rafe put a hand on my arm.
"Wait," he said.
"I never signed it."
"I believe you. Wait."
The lawyer kept going.
"The signature was captured on our client's tablet and date-stamped. It is binding."
"Show me the stamp," the judge said.
He handed a page up.
She read it, frowned, and turned it over.
"Ms. Tarrant," she said. "Do you dispute this signature?"
I stood.
"Yes, Your Honor."
"On what ground?"
"I was never given a final copy. I asked for my lawyer to read it, and I was refused. I never signed anything."
"The stamp says you signed on the evening of the fourteenth, at nine forty-one."
"Yes."
"Where were you at nine forty-one?"
