Chapter 17: The Creditor
The Kingsbury investor dinner had a hundred and twenty seats, and a card with my name on it was not one of them.
I walked in anyway.
The dress was red, because Bea had picked it and I had stopped arguing.
Rafe was on my left, in black.
My father stood on my right in the suit he had bought for the party, and he had refused to stay home.
The doorman at the ballroom looked at the guest list, looked at me, and went white.
"Ms. Tarrant, you're not on the list."
"I'm the holder of Kingsbury Hospitality's senior notes," I said. "Section four lets the holder attend any meeting of its investors. Your lawyer will confirm."
He did not call a lawyer.
He stepped aside.
Inside, a hundred and twenty people in evening clothes sat at round tables under the same chandeliers.
It was the room where they had played the video.
I saw the stage, and the screen, and the place by the cake where a woman had said my father's company was dead.
The talk dropped table by table as I walked down the center aisle.
Forks stopped.
Somebody whispered my name.
Someone else said, "That's the girl from the video."
I kept walking.
At the head table sat Brooks's father, white-haired, with a hard, shut face.
Next to him sat Brooks, gray with no sleep.
Next to Brooks sat his mother, in pearls and silver silk, her back straight.
On the other side of her, a card on the table read: RESERVED, MRS. KINGSBURY.
