Chapter 17: Wyatt's POV

Wyatt's POV

Gavin held the board dinner on Thursday night in a private room at the river club.

The table was set for nine, with white linen and a candle in front of every chair.

I sat three seats from the head, with the chair of the board on my left.

The chair was an old man who had known Deanna's father, and he was cutting his steak into very small pieces and saying nothing.

"To Deanna's father," Gavin said, standing, with his glass up. "Who taught me everything I know about this business."

Nobody drank at first.

Then the chief financial officer lifted his, and the rest of them followed, one by one.

I drank, too.

I did it because I wanted to look at each face over the rim of the glass.

"Tomorrow is painful," Gavin said, sitting. "My counsel has a forensic report on that video. It was assembled from several sources. I'd ask you to read it before you decide what to believe."

"Assembled," said a woman across from me.

"Spliced," Gavin said gently. "It's very good work."

Nobody asked who had done it.

That was how he won rooms.

He gave people one clean thing to hold, and they held it, and they didn't look at his other hand.

At nine he touched my shoulder.

"Wyatt. A word."

The terrace outside the private room was cold and empty, with the river black below.

Gavin leaned on the rail with his back to the city.

"I like you," he said. "I always have. That's why I'm doing this here."

"Doing what?"

He took a folded page from his inside pocket and held it out.

I took it.

It was a single sheet of company letterhead.

It said that Wyatt Corliss, a director of Hallstrom Home Systems, supported the immediate referral of Deanna Hallstrom to the authorities.
