Chapter 7: Founders Gala
The Hallstrom Founders Gala was that same night, at the old grain exchange on the river.
Joanna had planned it.
She planned it every year, and she was in the entrance hall with a headset on when I came up the steps in a green dress she'd lent me at four o'clock.
"I can't be seen helping you," she said, low, pinning a wristband to my wrist. "I'll lose the contract."
"I know."
"Please don't make a scene, sweet pea."
"I'm going to ask one question."
She looked at me for a moment.
"Then ask it fast," she said, and went to talk to a florist.
Wyatt was waiting inside, in a dark suit, by the director's table.
He didn't say I looked good.
He looked at me a second too long, then offered his arm.
"Third row from the stage, on the aisle," he said. "Nobody will stop you before the toast."
The ballroom was gold and glass and full of people I knew.
Investors, reporters, the city's money and the people who liked to stand near it.
Gavin was on the stage in a black tuxedo, with Kinsley at his side in the cream dress and the ring.
She saw me and went pale.
He saw her go pale and turned his head.
His smile held, and I'll give him that.
"Friends," he said into the microphone, "ten years ago I started this company with a credit card and a borrowed desk."
A little laugh moved through the room.
"I want to thank the people who stayed." He put his hand on Kinsley's back. "And the people who are building the next ten with me."
