Chapter 21: The Plum Tart
Maxine was at the penthouse door by nine with the menu change in a plastic sleeve.
We spread it out on Benedict's dining table between the wig stands and a plate of cold toast.
One page. Hotel letterhead. Typed.
GUEST OF HONOR TABLE, SPECIAL. Black plum tart, individual, dark crust, sugar glaze. In honor of our entertainment: Dead by Dessert's signature murder tart. To be prepared by the executive pastry chef personally.
At the bottom, in blue ink, a fat signature. Edmund Northcott.
"He signed it," Zelda said. "Who signs his own murder?"
"Nobody," I said. "It's not his murder. Read it again."
She read it again.
"Oh," she said slowly. "Oh, no."
"Tell me," Maxine said.
"Every show we've ever done," I said, "the victim eats a black plum tart. From the bakery next to the club. Five years. Hundreds of shows. It's on our posters."
"So on June 6, the guest of honor eats my murder dessert in my murder show, and she actually dies."
I tapped the page.
"It's not a poisoning. It's my script coming true. Written by me. Staged by me. With my bottle in the ashes of my building."
