The vow renewal had to wait. The speakeasy came first.
That was my rule, and for once the troupe didn't argue.
Benedict spent all of August in the basement of his own hotel, sanding red booths.
"Gran said you weren't allowed in the building," I said, the first morning.
"Gran said the hotel. This is your lease. I'm a contractor."
"You don't know how to sand."
"Hamlet's teaching me."
Our old Hamlet, it turned out, had built sets for thirty years before he ever played a Dane.
By the second week, Benedict could strip a brass rail and rewire a sconce. By the third, he had opinions about varnish.
"Too glossy," he said, about a booth. "It'll look like a dessert."
"Everything here looks like a dessert," Maxine called from the end of the bar. "That's the brand."
