Chapter 8: Return to Sender
I called the bank before the alert faded off my screen.
A tired man in a headset told me the card was frozen as of now.
"And the order?"
"Already processed, ma'am. It's shipping. You can refuse it at the door."
"Shipping where?"
Keys clicked.
"Clark Street. Is that not your address?"
I looked around the dark supper club. The cot. The cat. The case board.
"It is now," I said.
Nobody knew I lived here.
Nobody except my troupe, my husband, and whoever had walked in through a locked door on Tuesday.
[the package!!! she's going to sign for it]
[no she's not. she literally just froze the card]
[the book ex-wife would sign for it]
[this is NOT the book ex-wife anymore and I need everyone to accept that]
It came Friday at eleven.
A white padded envelope. A little brown box inside you could feel through the plastic.
The driver held out his scanner.
HENRIETTA NORTHCOTT, it said. Not Fowler. Nobody who actually knows me calls me Northcott.
"Zel," I said. "Phone. Now. Film everything."
Zelda stood behind me with her phone up.
"Ready. Go. Be beautiful."
"I'm refusing this package," I said to the camera. "I didn't order it. My card was used without my permission on Tuesday night. I reported it to my bank at 9:12 p.m."
The delivery driver looked from me to Zelda to the phone.
"Lady, I just need a yes or a no."
"No. Return to sender. Please write that on it."
He wrote RETURN TO SENDER in black marker, across HENRIETTA NORTHCOTT.
I made him hold it up for the camera.
"Is this a TikTok?" he asked.
