Chapter 19: The Folder in the Rain

It was raining again when Bea's truck pulled up at the riverfront gate at ten to midnight.

"You're not going in alone," said Declan, from the back seat.

"He said alone."

"He also lied for fourteen months."

"He lied to you," I said. "I'm not the one he's afraid of."

Declan caught my good hand before I could open the door.

I looked at his fingers closed around mine, and I thought about rule three, and I didn't say it.

I put my palm flat against the center of his chest instead.

His heart was banging under the wet wool of his coat.

"I'm starting this one," I said. "Wait here."

"Hallie."

"Ten minutes. If I'm not out, you can kick the door."

His jaw worked, and then he nodded.

I got out and ran across the gravel with my hood up and my sling tucked under my jacket.

The trailer door was unlocked.

The lawyer sat on my old chair in the dark with the leather folder on his knees and a flashlight in his lap, the beam pointed at the floor.

He looked smaller than he had on the thirty-first floor.

His grey suit was soaked at the shoulders, and his hair was flat to his skull.

"Mrs. Ashworth," he said.

That was the first time he had used the name.

"Say what you came to say," I said. "I've got a husband in a truck."

"Mr. Draycott told me to burn this tomorrow morning, before the signing."

"What signing?"

"Saturday, ten o'clock, in the Draycott atrium. Mr. Ashworth transfers a controlling stake in his company in exchange for Mr. Draycott releasing the note." He swallowed. "The press will be there. It is to be presented as a rescue."
