Chapter 20: Nothing Written Down

Declan's POV

I sat in the truck for ten minutes after I saw Garrison's car pull out behind the lawyer.

Then Bea said, "Go," and I went.

I followed both of them to Upper Arlington at fifty miles an hour with my hazards on.

The lawyer turned into his own driveway.

Garrison's car slid past the house, slow, and kept going.

It was only meant to be seen.

At dawn the lawyer's porch light was still on.

I didn't knock.

I sat across the street with a cold coffee and watched his curtains, and at six a text came through from a number I had never saved.

*Nothing yet.*

That was all.

I drove to Bexley with the phone in my fist and found my grandmother in her garden in a man's old coat, cutting the last roses.

"You look dreadful," she said.

"I'm resigning."

She went on cutting.

"As CEO," I said. "At nine-fifty-nine tomorrow morning. One minute before Garrison's signing."

"I thought as much."

"You thought?"

"You came up my path like a man with a pamphlet." She snipped a stem. "Explain it to me."

"The transfer needs the CEO's signature. If I'm not the CEO, there's nothing to sign."

"And who runs the company?"

"You're chair of the board, with my proxy and a cane. Garrison can't buy you."

"And the statement he wants from Hallie?"

"That she trapped a drunk man to get ahead at his company." I breathed out.

"If I'm out of the company, there's nothing she got ahead on. The story doesn't hold."
