Chapter 16: On One Knee
The Corvane holiday party was in a hotel ballroom on Sixth Street, and by nine o'clock Friday night it was loud.
I wore a green dress Renee had talked me into and a coat Quinton had draped on my shoulders in the parking lot.
He stood beside me in a gray suit that fit him better than it had any right to.
"You don't have to be here," he said.
"He wants me to be afraid to be here. So I'm here."
"I'll stay next to you."
"I'd like that."
Renee had told the front desk that Bryce VanDorn was banned from the building, and the hotel had two guards at the main doors.
The friend's screenshot said the plan was a kitchen entrance.
Renee had put a guard there too.
None of it mattered.
At 9:20 the president of Corvane, up from Chicago, took the microphone on the stage and thanked everyone for a hard year.
He had barely finished the second sentence when a waiter in a white jacket walked to the front of the dance floor.
The waiter turned around.
It was Bryce.
He had shaved. He had gotten a haircut. He held a small velvet box in his right hand.
Somebody screamed softly.
The guards started across the ballroom.
"Please," Bryce said into the sudden silence. He didn't need a microphone, because the DJ had stopped the music. "Let me say one thing and then I'll go."
The guards stopped in the middle of the floor.
I did not know why.
Then I saw the president lift one hand.
He wanted to hear it.
Bryce dropped to one knee.
"Sabina MacIntyre. You've been the only person who has loved me for seven years, and I treated you like you'd always be there."
My stomach turned over.
"I made a terrible mistake. I let people make me small. I lied to my mother, and I lied to you, and I've lost my job and my brother and my dignity."
