Chapter 4: The Clean Office
Sabina's POV
Renee was waiting at the Austin airport at ten that night with a sign that said SABINA MACINTYRE, FUGITIVE.
She had written it on the back of a pizza box.
"I'm not a fugitive," I said.
"You're on the run from a man who locks doors. It counts."
She hugged me hard and then pressed the back of her hand to my forehead.
"Still hot. You're sleeping in my guest room, you're taking the pills, and I won't hear a word about a hotel."
"Renee, I can't."
"You can. My husband already made the bed and my kids already told me they get to keep you."
In the back seat of her SUV, a nine-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy stared at me over their seat belts.
"Are you the lady who got left on a bridge?" the girl asked.
"Yes."
"Did you push him in the river?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"It was raining," I said. "I was busy."
The boy nodded. It was a fair answer.
By midnight I was in a bed that smelled of laundry soap, with a plate of Thanksgiving leftovers on my knees and a six-year-old explaining that mashed potatoes were the correct sandwich filling.
I laughed so hard it turned into a cough.
It was the first time in two days I had laughed.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand.
An unknown number.
Then another, and another.
By Friday morning there had been five.
I let them ring out.
The sixth one came at noon, while I stood in Renee's kitchen drying a pan.
I answered it.
"Sabina."
It was Bryce, and his voice was thin.
