Chapter 5: Tea With the Empress
Elora reached the cliff terrace just as Dacian crushed the cup.
She had told him a lie in the library, that a nurse in Lowmere had hummed the lullaby to her as a child, and he had let her go with a look that said the lie was noted.
She had no idea what the lie had bought her.
She stood at the back of the crowd and watched the wine drip off his fingers.
Mirelle stood at the front, in a white shawl, with Aurek's hand on her wrist.
Elora's stomach dropped.
Mirelle looked up, found her in the crowd, and gave the smallest shrug.
It meant: I'm fine, this is not what it looks like, and I will explain.
"Brother," Aurek said, very evenly, "your wife was lost, and I walked her to the temple. Nothing more."
"At dawn."
"The hour does not change the road."
"No," Dacian said. "But it changes the story."
He looked at Mirelle.
For one second Elora saw something under the anger, something raw and young that did not belong on a man like him.
Then he smiled, and it was gone.
"Enough," said a dry voice from the dais.
The old woman in the iron crown had come to the head of the terrace without a sound.
"The sun is rising," the Empress said. "Whatever my sons are arguing about, they will argue about it at tea. All four of you. Noon, in my garden."
She turned and walked away, and the court breathed again.
The tea garden was walled in black stone and full of flowers that bloomed in the shape of flames.
A long table stood in the center with a pot of something steaming and a plate of small, hard cakes.
The Empress sat at the head with her hands folded.
Elora had been placed between her own husband and her friend's, which she suspected was a joke.
Mirelle sat across from her, beside Aurek.
