Chapter 15: Wolfsbane

I woke in pieces.

First there was a floor moving under me, and a chest against my cheek.

Then a voice, close and cracked. "Stay with me. Stay with me, Rowley."

Then nothing, for a long time.

When I came back, I was lying in the narrow bed in Pearl's back room, the one I'd slept in as a child.

Every inch of me was on fire.

Pearl stood over me with a wet cloth, and her mouth was a hard line.

"Wolfsbane," she said. "It was in the tea."

"I know," I whispered.

"You knew and you walked up that hill alone?"

"I thought it was nerves."

"You stubborn little fool," she said, and her eyes were wet.

Lachlan sat on the other side of the bed.

His shirt was soaked through, and his hands were wrapped around mine.

He had left a dinner with the Eastern Alpha in the middle of a sentence.

He had run down the ridge on four legs and carried me up the lodge steps in his arms.

"How long?" I said.

"Most of the night."

"What do you do for it?"

"Nothing," Pearl said bluntly. "Salt, honey and water, and you sweat it out. The bond helps if he keeps hold of you. Skin to skin."

"Then I'll keep hold of her," Lachlan said.

"Good," said Pearl. "Because I'm going to the creek to wash sheets, and I'm taking a very long time."

She went out, and the door clicked.

The fever rose again, and I thrashed, and Lachlan put his forehead on mine and held my wrists until it passed.

He talked to me the whole time.

He told me about the ridge, and the hives, and the first time he saw me in the pack hall in a yellow dress when I was nineteen and had no idea who he was.

I held on to his voice.

Sometime before dawn, the heat went out of me all at once.

I lay in the cold, damp sheets and drew a breath that didn't hurt.
