The memorial feast for my grandfather filled the club with long tables and the smell of roasted peppers.
Two hundred men ate and drank and watched me.
I sat in his chair at the head table in my black dress, with the key to the safe against my skin.
Ilario sat on my right and didn't touch his plate.
We hadn't talked about the call since morning, and I hadn't asked him a single thing.
I had made myself wait.
Nunzio sat on my left, shaking, with a glass of water in both hands.
Ettore came in late, with his father, and Fiamma was not with them.
He took the chair across from me and unbuttoned his coat.
"Marta," he said, and smiled, and he said nothing else for a while.
When the plates were cleared, the lawyer stood.
He wore the same gray suit and held the same gray folder, but there was a second envelope in his other hand, sealed with red wax.
"By petition of nine captains," he said, "I am called to open the vote tonight."
"Before the vote, I have an instruction from the late Mr. Lucchesi. This envelope was to be opened in front of the captains at the vote, whether early or late."
"I have not read it. I will read it now."
Ettore leaned back with his hands behind his head.
He didn't look surprised.
I looked at his face, and I understood that he already knew what was in it.
The lawyer broke the seal.
He read the first line, and he stopped, and his eyes went across the room to Ilario.
