Chapter 4: Nothing Left

Dominic's office was on the second floor of the shipping warehouse at Pier 40.

One wall of it was glass, so he could see the loading floor, and the loading floor could see him.

I went up the metal stairs alone.

Fitz waited in the car with the engine off.

The men at the long table outside the office stopped talking when I reached the landing.

They stood up one by one, the way they had in the club, and nobody told me why.

I walked through them and opened his door.

Dominic was behind his desk with his sleeves rolled up and a cold cup of coffee in front of him.

He stood so fast his chair rolled into the wall.

"Anneliese."

"Gia was in our kitchen this morning."

"I know. My men called. I'm sorry, that was not what I wanted."

"She was wearing my robe. You gave her a key."

"I gave her a key in June because she said she was locked out of her own place. I never told her to use it."

"She said to ask you where you were on the ninth of November."

I watched the words land on him.

He didn't move, and then he put one hand flat on the desk to hold himself up.

"Tell me she didn't say that."

"Where were you?"

"At Pier 12. A sit-down with six captains that ran until dawn. Every phone went into a basket at the door. Ask any of them."
