Chapter 17: The Price
"No," I said.
The Chancellor raised his thin eyebrows.
"You haven't asked him."
"I don't need to. You're not getting him."
"Then I'll have to make do with her." He nodded at the cage. "Highcrag likes a hanging at midwinter. It warms people up."
Bettris laughed at him from behind the bars.
"My brother would chew through your whole army to get me back," she said. "And then he'd eat your horse."
He looked at me.
"Carry it up the hill, Lady Alys," he said. "Let him choose."
Drystan walked me back to the picket in silence.
At the last tent he stopped.
"The key's on his belt day and night," he said, not looking at me. "But the cage is an Eyrie cage. The old kind, with the pin locks."
I looked at him.
"I'm only saying what it is," he said, and walked away.
I climbed back up the pass in the snow.
Wystan was at the gate.
"What does he want?"
I told him.
He didn't say anything at all.
"You're not doing it," I said.
"Alys."
"You're not. There's another way."
I found Dorrit in the stables with her arms round the grey mare's neck.
