Chapter 20: The Postern
The crowd on the road turned to look at me.
Somebody in it said "witch" again.
Nobody threw anything.
Not yet.
"Then the witnesses aren't coming in either," the youngest of the Wing shouted up at the wall, standing on the black chest.
"Suit yourselves."
The captain went away from the parapet.
Bettris had her bow half up.
I put my hand on her pony's neck.
"Not here," I said. "There are children on this road."
We pulled the cart off into the trees by the river, out of the torchlight.
Nobody lit a fire.
The cook handed round cold bread.
"Well," Dorrit said, "that's the King's peace, then. I'd hate to see his war."
"There's the river wall," Bettris said. "I could fly us over."
"And every crossbow on it would be pointed at a clan drake over Highcrag two nights before the Moot."
"I don't care."
"Your brother would," I said.
She shut her mouth.
Somewhere in the dark, a bell rang ten.
Then I heard a sound by the river.
A small door opening, low down in the wall, just above the water.
