Chapter 9: The Clinic
My follow-up appointment was on a Thursday at eleven, and Leah couldn't come because she had a shift at the pharmacy.
"I'll skip it," she said on the phone.
"Don't. I can sit in a waiting room by myself."
"Audrey."
"I taught thirty six-year-olds to share scissors for ten years. I can handle a waiting room."
She was quiet for a moment.
"Text me when you're done," she said. "Even if it's one letter."
The clinic was on the second floor of the same hospital.
I took the stairs so I wouldn't have to stand in the elevator with anyone, and I signed in with my own name and the date.
I sat in a plastic chair under a poster about folic acid.
Two women across from me had round bellies, and one of them was laughing at something on her phone.
I kept my eyes on my hands.
"Audrey."
I knew the voice before I looked up.
Hoyt stood in front of me with a bunch of white roses wrapped in paper.
He had shaved badly and his collar was crooked.
"How did you know where I'd be?" I asked.
"It was on the calendar on the fridge. I called the clinic to check the time."
"You called the clinic."
"I wanted to be here."
"You want to be here now."
He sat down beside me and held the flowers out.
I did not take them.
"Audrey, I was wrong," he said. "I was wrong about the cake, and the door, and the officers. I'm not saying it so you'll come back. I'm saying it because it's true."
It was the first honest sentence he had said in a week.
