Chapter 19: Monday at Eight

The building-supply company took up four floors of glass downtown.

I had been inside it once, for a holiday party, in a borrowed dress, standing next to my husband while he told people I was "the nurse."

On Monday at five to eight I walked through the lobby with Shelby on my arm and her gray phone in her coat pocket.

The boss's office was on the top floor, with a long window and a conference table.

He stood when we came in.

A woman from human resources sat at his left with a laptop, and she did not smile.

"Ms. Birkett. Ms. Quade. Please sit."

We sat.

"Ms. Quade, play me the recording," he said.

Shelby set the gray phone on the table.

He listened to all of it with his eyes closed, and the HR woman typed.

When it ended, he opened his eyes.

"I want it on the record that you both came voluntarily." He turned to Shelby. "Ms. Quade, you work for me. I need you to tell me about your work."

Shelby's hands were in her lap, and I saw her knuckles.

"Chandler asked me to keep an eye on his wife," she said. "On company time. He had me email him her schedule from a work account. He had me text his mother."

"Do you still have those messages?"

"All of them."

She took a folder from her bag, and from the folder she took a stack of pages.

"He also told me she was cold, that the marriage was finished, and that the house was his. He told me that in this building."
