Chapter 6: Blue Ink
"Oh, you found it," Signe said, and she laughed.
It was a light, easy laugh, and she crossed the parlor with the pitcher and set it on the sideboard.
"I was looking for the same thing myself. That's Mother's recipe folder."
"It says draft four for the doctor."
"Does it?" She took it from my hand and glanced at the top page. "Oh, honey. That's my work. Anders asked me to put the list in order, because he can't spell and the doctor needed something typed. I made a few drafts."
"You wrote the list."
"I copied the list. From his notes." She tucked the folder under her arm. "Cora, you're white as a sheet. Sit down. Let me get you some tea."
"No."
"You're upset."
"I'm going home."
"Home where?"
She said it kindly, with her head tilted.
It was the kindest voice in the world.
In the dining room Margit sat with her hands folded and her eyes on the tablecloth.
Anders stood up as I came in.
I looked at him and waited.
He opened his mouth and closed it again.
I picked up my bag and walked out.
Behind me, I heard Signe say, very softly, "Oh, Anders. Let her go. She's not herself."
I drove straight down Sparrow Cove Road and pulled into Cliff's gravel drive with my phone already out.
He opened the door in a T-shirt and sweatpants, with a sandwich in his hand.
"You look like you saw a ghost."
"I saw Signe."
He put the sandwich down.
I showed him the three photographs on the kitchen table.
