Chapter 17: The Ledger
Faye's POV
My father put the pen down and looked at me.
He did not look ashamed.
He looked tired.
"It is for Tobias," he said. "You would have done it yourself if you were a real daughter."
"I would have given it to him," I said. "If you had asked me."
The lawyer lunged for the signed page.
He was too late.
Rowan's driver stepped out of the dark hall behind us with his phone raised, and the little red light was on.
"Mr. Penhallow signed at two thirty-one," the driver said, in a pleasant voice. "I have the whole thing."
Leland came across the carpet at me with his good hand out.
He wanted the phone, or my throat, I could not tell which.
I stepped aside.
I had stepped aside from him once before, and I knew how his weight would fall.
My needle went into the point of his shoulder, and he dropped to one knee on his father's carpet, with his arm hanging dead.
"Take it out," he said through his teeth.
"In an hour."
"Father!"
My father sat with his hands flat on the desk.
"The detective is on the line already," Rowan said from the doorway, and held up his own phone. "He would like a word with you, Mr. Penhallow, about a guardianship petition and a consent to remove a healthy woman's kidney."
The lawyer picked up his briefcase and walked out of the room very fast.
He did not say goodbye.
At dawn I sat at the foot of Tobias's bed in the grey house, with my coat still on.
Rowan stood by the window.
Tobias had heard the whole story from the nurse, and he was gray under his yellow.
"Father signed it," he said.
